Co-curated with Anna McNay who wrote the accompanying essay ‘On Speaking Otherness’. Anna hosted a panel discussion with artists Howard Dyke, Marcelle Hanselaar and Freya Pocklington on 24 March 2024 at Digswell Village Hall. Thanks to all who came!

What a collection! An absolute joy, thank you!

Woman has been the object of art for centuries, while women, as producers of art, have remained marginalised. As an image, or object, woman is typically passive, possessable and powerless. What does it take for a female artist to break out of this mould and present herself as both subject and object of a work?

The works in this exhibition – images of women, by both male and female artists, drawn largely from the Jones Art Collection – address this question by means of lively dialogue traversing barriers not only of gender, but of time, race, sexuality and more.
